Hi Everyone Sherry Canino here and it's an honor to be part of the StencilGirl Creative Team and have this opportunity to share some creative time with all of you today.
I absolutely love love love fun, bright and bold colors and art journal page that I have to share with you today has all those things. But, I have to be honest when I (in my imagination) came up with this idea it seemed so cute and whimsical and fun....... And then I started to create it and and OMG I thought I was going to have to start all over and come up with something different because as I worked on the page I did not like it at all!
Has this ever happened to you? I think at some point it has happened to all of us and I will admit that this is not my first experience! As a matter of fact, it has happened many times and at first when I was a bit new at art journaling I would abandon the page, throw it out or paint over it. But at some point on one of those pages way back when, on a page that I totally disliked I kept going and going and going (sounding like the Energizer bunny here now lol) but you get my point. Instead of telling myself I can't make this into what I want, kept at it and I allowed it to evolve into what it was meant to be.
A sweet friend, fellow Artist and Teammate Karen Gaunt said it had a Alice in Wonderland Flair to it with the more realistic faces and you know I have to agree. It wasn't what I envisioned in my head but I like it and it's cute and fun and light, which was what I intended.
I share this with all of you today because I think that many times people see more experienced artists and they think wow everything they make turns out wonderful and I want you to know that is so not the case. We all struggle at times and we are all at different places in our creative journeys. So,embrace where you are in yours and push though some of those more difficult pieces and see what happens. Most of all love who you are and what YOU create because you are special and unique!!

Flowers delight Jennifer Evans. She designed these lovely, delicate stencils in homage to spring and summer. The 9" x 12" features a large flower at the center with floral sprays within a leaf frame, the mini 4"x 4" is a leaf motif (perfect for repeating a background), and the 6" x 6" is a cluster of posies. I recently hosted my
second “boutique/home” workshop with a class called Hamsa House Shrines. This
workshop was limited to ten people and included the royal treatment with
breakfast goodies and coffee being served in the morning, a fresh lunch in the
afternoon, followed by a happy hour after class each day! My husband, David,
was not only my sherpa but also a barista, bartender and sous chef!
The house substrate was
a perfect base on which to use my border stencils. Designed for the 1.5 inch
deep cradle panel boards that I often use as a substrate, they worked perfectly
on the sides of this house shape that I had made in Mexico for me. (At the end
of the day, after stenciling the border design on the sides of the house shape,
I then attached small metal findings for added dimension and interest.)
I also demonstrated how
to use the stencils directly on Premo! polymer clay, an application that is
perfect for stencils! If you roll over the stencil on unbaked clay with a rolling
pin, it creates an embossed surface that readily accepts paint or mica powders.
This technique gives a totally different appearance than if I had used a rubber
stamp to create the design. I also love
that it is one more use for a stencil, as versatility in products is an
important selling point for me. This hand image was create using Jessica Sporn's Five Hamsas stencil on
clay:

As an instructor, it is
always such a thrill to see how students adapt techniques in their own unique
way coming up with beautiful works of art, each one a reflection of the person
who created it.
Supplies: • 10” round wood panel • L499 Large Butterfly with Border stencil • Acrylic paint • Water soluble crayons (Neocolors or Inktense) Optional: Decorative charger for base 1:Gesso the wood panel and paint background color (I chose a neutral putty color.) Let dry. Using painter’s tape, center and secure the stencil on 3 sides. There are some very intricate parts of this stencil and the tape helps prevent the stencil from sliding around. 2: Using a dark color, stencil the design. I used a dark blue and purple mixture. When dry, use water soluble watercolors or Inktense blocks to scribble in color. It’s perfectly OK to color outside the lines! Using a brush with plain water, saturate the color to give it a watercolor effect. (I pushed some of the color beyond the bounds of the stencil, and I liked how this looked.) 3: Continue to work in the colors. I like to layer colors for an interesting effect. (See the yellow added over the pink in the flower blooms, to the right?) I used yellow in the lower half of the butterfly, but decided later to mix that with blue. Finishing: attach a hanger to the back of the wood circle, or find something to repurpose for a wall hanging. Top right: I painted and antiqued a decorative charger, then glued the wood circle to it. But wouldn’t it also be fun in the center of a grapevine wreath, or a wire or wicker braided circular wall hanging?
You can see how the large Butterfly with Border and Small Butterfly stencil are gorgeous used as a mandala or masked to stencil a single butterfly when you are creating art for your home (stenciled pillow cover or a clock face), want to add a flutter to your art journal, or make a friend smile with a greeting card.
Supplies: • 5”x7” canvas • Butterfly 6x6 stencil • Acrylic paint • Bristol or Mixed Media paper • Matte Medium • Alphabet rubber stamps • Optional: acrylic paint markers 1: Gesso canvas and paint background color (I chose a lilac chalkpaint.) Cut a heart from Bristol or Mixed Media paper and paint with acrylic paint. Distress edges of the heart, if desired. Trim to fit on canvas. 2: Using only 1/4 of the butterfly medallion, stencil butterfly and florals onto the heart. Add an extra flower above, on each side, to fill in the heart. Apply acrylic paint colors as desired. (I used black paint for the stencil step, then filled in with colors.) 3: For the fine detail work, I like to use Acrylic ink pens. I have a basic set of Derwent Graphik fine tip pens that come in handy for this. When dry, secure the heart to the canvas with Matte Medium. If desired, use alphabet stamps to add a word. Shade around the heart with watercolor pencil, then blend the pencil with a brush and plain water.

Jennifer Evans created her Faces in the Crowd stencil to give artists an option when painting and journaling.
